Game Changers
At Immanuel, sport is where confidence grows and character shines. It’s not just about winning – it’s about showing up, working hard, and being part of something bigger.
From the pool to the pitch, the court to the track, our students build skills, resilience and school spirit through a wide range of team and individual sports. Whether they’re just getting started or chasing big goals, there’s a place for every student to get moving and get involved.
Why Sport Matters
Sport at Immanuel goes far beyond physical fitness. Our programs help students develop crucial life skills that serve them well beyond their school years.
Through sport, students learn teamwork, resilience, and leadership while building confidence and character. Whether they’re aiming for competitive excellence or simply enjoying the game, every athlete at Immanuel is supported to achieve their personal best.
Our Sporting Legacy
Alyce Wood
Alyce Wood is a three-time Olympian (Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024), a World Champion, World Cup medallist, multiple-time Australian Champion, and Australian record holder. However, being a Mum is her favourite title.
Drawing on her experiences as both a mother and an elite athlete, Alyce is a strong advocate for female athletes, working to create opportunities and pathways that enable women to balance family life with their sporting ambitions.
Outside of sport, Alyce holds a Bachelor of Communication (Journalism & Public Relations) and a Master of Business Administration (Public Policy). After retiring from elite sport post-Paris 2024, she transitioned into a career as a Project Manager in the construction industry. Alyce also serves as the Deputy Chair of the Australian Olympic Athletes Commission and is a member of the Australian Institute of Sport Athlete Advisory Committee.
Alana Boyd
Alana Boyd made her Olympic debut in Beijing 2008, competing in the women’s pole vault where she finished in 16th place. At the Games she made Australian Olympic history by becoming the first Australian to join both parents as Olympians.
The Queenslander competed in the 2001 AYOF in hurdles and the 4x100m relay before starting pole vaulting in 2002.
At the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Boyd won gold in the pole vault joining parents Ray (pole vault, 1982) and Denise (200m, 1978) as an individual Commonwealth Games title-holder. This was the first time the feat had been achieved by the son or daughter of a gold medal-winning couple in Australian history. Boyd made her second Games appearance in London where she made the final of the pole vault and finished in 11th place.
At Rio 2016, she came within centimetres of a medal. Boyd and New Zealand's Eliza McCartney both finished with a best clearance of 4.80 metres. As McCartney jumped clean through the opening heights she won the bronze medal and Boyd finished fourth. Ekaterini Stefandi of Greece and Sandi Morris of the USA won gold and silver with a clearance of 4.85 metres.
Dr Melanie Wright OAM
Dr Melanie Wright (née Schlanger) embodies the transformative power of an Immanuel education.
A dual Olympic gold medallist who began her competitive swimming journey at age 14, Melanie's talent was nurtured through Immanuel's supportive coaching program. Her decade-long swimming career saw her represent Australia at multiple Olympics, including Beijing 2008 and London 2012, culminating in five Olympic gold medals.
But Melanie's story doesn't end in the pool – she has since traded her swimming cap for a stethoscope, now serving as a doctor on the Sunshine Coast. Her remarkable journey from Olympic champion to medical professional exemplifies the Immanuel spirit: ambitious yet grounded, excellence-driven yet community-focused.
Awarded the Order of Australia Medal for her contributions to sport, Melanie continues to inspire the next generation of Immanuel students, showing them that with determination and support, they can achieve excellence in any field they choose
